In the midst of a bounce-back season, J.D. Martinez is unsure about his future with the Boston Red Sox.

Martinez has an opt-out clause in his contract that would allow him to become a free agent this coming offseason.

"I'm right in the middle," Martinez said. "It's a balancing line, and I'm right in the middle. I haven't made a decision. I don't worry about that stuff, but right now I'm right in the middle."

Martinez, 34, has hit .285/.349/.516 (126 OPS+) with 27 home runs in his first 142 games this season.

Joe Maddon said Tuesday that Shohei Ohtani's comments this past weekend about wanting to win don't mean the star wants to leave the Los Angeles Angels when he becomes a free agent after the 2023 season.

Ohtani said Sunday that although he likes the team, the fans and the atmosphere, his top priority is winning.

"We all feel the same way -- we all want to win," Maddon said. "If anybody misconstrues that as though he wants to leave, that's trying to connect some dots that weren't necessarily what he, not at all what he said.

"He also mentioned how much he loves it here. The inner sanctum of the clubhouse, the guys, the coaching staff, everything about it. The area. The fans. He loves them all. We all want to get to the next level, and we see it as an absolute possibility it's going to happen here in the very near future."

Adam Wainwright plans to return for a 17th Major League season and the expectation is that he will agree to a new deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The two sides have been encouraged by "introductory" contract discussions and hope a new deal will be hammered out "in the near future."

The 40-year-old has a 3.05 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 200 1/3 innings pitched.

Miguel Rojas reached 500 plate appearance over the weekend, triggering the vesting option in his contract with the Miami Marlins for the 2022 season.

In 2019, Rojas agreed to a two-year, $10.25 million extension that bought out his final arbitration year and first free-agent season. It carried a $5.5 million vesting option for the 2022 season.

The San Diego Padres have placed Blake Snell on the injured list with a left adductor groin strain.

San Diego also signed Vince Velasquez to a Minor League contract and recalled Shaun Anderson from Triple-A El Paso.

Snell, 28, injured his groin in the first inning of Sunday's 8-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Toronto Blue Jays have cut struggling reliever Brad Hand.

Hand was designated for assignment before Tuesday's game. He went 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA in 11 games after being acquired from the Washington Nationals on July 29.
